My treatment approach is to first get to know the afflicted person and earn their trust. Second, I try to frame the disordered eating as a problem which carries and hides other problems. In therapy, I use many methods to explore and balance environmental stressors, distorted thinking, bodily awareness, emotional regulation and information processing. I aim to address the disordered eating and all of the underlying problems supporting it. Third, I advocate an eclectic approach including family and group support, meal planning, substance abuse counselling etc. I highly recommend we collaborate with a physician, dietician and physical therapist.

Eating disorder can be seen as a condition characterized by unhealthy eating habits that may involve either too little or too much food intake to the detriment of the individual's physical & emotional well-being. Bulimia nervosa, binge eating, & anorexia nervosa are the most common forms of eating disorders. It is not known with certainty what causes eating disorders, however, it is known that they can be due to combination's of biological, psychological or environmental cause.The treatment for eating disorders will vary, for each individuals eating disorder. I view eating disorders as process addictions. I view addictions and compulsions as coping strategies that persist because they work (or once did); but are being identified as disordered because they no longer help the client cope they way they once did. So, sourcing the root of the disorer is essential. There are also specific strategies for altering habitual behaviors that can be quite useful as the client turns from a failing method of coping to one that in fact functions and permits personsl growth toward self-actualization.
