Most therapists these days realize that we are not isolated individuals and neither are our problems. We live in relationships and families. Our identities and roles in life are, to a large extent, formed by the families we grow up in and even by the culture in which we live. Some of these roles, for example, might be the black sheep, or the scapegoat, or the problem child, or the loser. These roles are in contrast to the star, or the favorite child, or the successful one. Family therapy looks to the larger picture and notes the important influences in causing emotional suffering. Family therapy is a form of counseling that views problems as an expression of patterns of behavior that exist within the inter-relations of family members. Rather than attributing the problem behavior to an individual member, the entire family system is taken into account. Capital Counseling works with families to understand how undesired behaviors function within the family system, and to identify changes in behavior among several or all family members that eliminate the targeted behavior. Family therapy can be helpful in preventing any one individual from being labeled as “the problem” as it focuses on the social context of the family out of which the behavior develops.

Where moms self-abnegate and children are wrong, family counselling helps reduce tension. Casting or assuaging wrongful blame rerely helps; it's considered much more beneficial to access restitution via admission of guilt by the offender. It takes a big person. to admit he was wrong!!!! Confession, affidavit, apology, rescinsion, abdication, exhonneration, invalidation, and denial often work. Where denial can be seen as a cop-out - particularly when there is a loss of life, denial o culpability where children cast blamesgo the mother an be iewed as good.

family therapy and family systems is truly my specialty. A family history of drinking alcohol for example is important for the client to be aware of in regards to their potential to become alcoholics. Also, patterns of anger, divorce, and abuse can be passed on from generation to generation, and it is important for the client to become aware and identify patterns verbally with the therapist to process and acknowledge these patterns for future generations. I also invite family members to be part of the session, as long as this is agreed upon by the client.
