Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

300 Brickstone Square, Suite 201, Andover, Massachusetts 01810

I work with adult children with their parents in the family therapy setting. From the Family System perspective, when an adult children transition into adulthood, he/she learns to gain control and power to his/her while his/her parents relinquish the power but continues to provide the guidance. In addition, as the economy has been up and down in the past decade, many adult children have to move home to live with their parents. As the result, it causes the power shift and requires the negotiation in the family. My approach to the family therapy in this situation is to help the family restructure their power and to negotiate the rules and responsibility shared by each family members.

As a psychologist who focuses on marriage and relationship counseling, and works with families, I find special interest in the Holiday Season! It offend provides useful opportunities for my clients to observe the dynamics in their own families of origin. Doesn't it often feel too easy to slip back into the old interaction patterns? It's like families have a certain "gravitational pull," and as a family therapist I believe we can learn a lot about ourselves as individuals, as well as improve family life, by better understanding the families from which we came and the family life we now are creating with our spouses and children.

When families come into counseling together they can be under extraordinary amounts of stress. One or sometimes all members of the family can be acting in ways that do not align with the values they believe in. We will create a family mission statement, determine values, and then work on correcting the individual behaviors that are creating distress. Family counseling can be fun at times, and children appreciate the use of games and my gentle, hypoallergenic therapy dog in sessions. I use humor in my sessions with teenagers to keep them engaged and break down their walls. Imagine coming home to a peaceful household where you feel supported, appreciated, and loved.

There is a lot of folks who need help with blended families, families with ACOA issues, family of origin patterns that have been passed down that are life stealing, and an inability to manage the marital relationship when there is a health issue with a child, or one another. Anything can cause an imbalance in the family dynamic and we work together to give a voice to each member and look for solutions to bring healing to the family unit.

Relationships with those we love are some of the most significant factors in our happiness and mental well-being. Disharmony in relationships – partners, family or friends – causes frustration and sadness, but psychotherapy can help. I meet with couples, siblings, parents and children - often together - but there are times when other people in our relationships are unavailable or unwilling to seek therapy. Nevertheless, therapy can still help individuals resolve relationship problems even if those others aren't present. Sometimes, despite all our best efforts, a relationship needs to end. In that case, I help individuals and families navigate the challenges of break-ups and divorce.

I enjoy working with families and am comfortable with the challenge of seeing two or all members in a session. I invite collaboration as we create a treatment plan based on your goals, utilizing creation of a family map to identify coping patterns and especially the strengths of your family and of each member. I am always in awe of the courage of a family's willingness to seek help and I know that when just one member starts to change there will be change in the family. Staying the course with identifying strategies such as homework assignments, role playing and practice can lead to deeper understanding of what works to enhance intimacy skills and build resilience.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. Our key relationships define us in direct and indirect ways. The need to be loved, accepted, known, seen, heard, protected, cared for, attached is hard wired into each and every human being. For most, the experience of family is core to this need being met. Working with an entire family unit is a privilege. Each family member has the opportunity to have a voice and share his/her perspective. Each can ask for change. Long standing roles can be shed. New approaches to communication and understanding attempted and, when successful, adopted. Families are where we are empowered for living. My client family members enjoy empowering others and being empowered by those they love.
