Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. Understanding your family, understanding the roles each family member plays as well as what your role is within your family can be some of the best work a person can do in order to be a more cohesive family unit. Most families struggle with how to make their families work in a more cohesive and harmonious manner. It takes work but it is well worth the investment.

family therapy and family systems is truly my specialty. A family history of drinking alcohol for example is important for the client to be aware of in regards to their potential to become alcoholics. Also, patterns of anger, divorce, and abuse can be passed on from generation to generation, and it is important for the client to become aware and identify patterns verbally with the therapist to process and acknowledge these patterns for future generations. I also invite family members to be part of the session, as long as this is agreed upon by the client.

I use the belief that our family relationships determine to a significant extent our ability to form healthy relationships. We each carry ways that limit is in intimate relationship based on adaptations that are unconscious, and powerfully limit flexibility. I work to free individuals, and couples from these family patterns that keep us stuck.

Family therapy is working with the system, or the people who are present within the area of the problem. Even though a problem may be presented in one member, all members are being affected by the problem. It is the system that needs to be altered or taught how to work on communication, or interacting differently with each other. This can alter the problem. When one person changes, everyone changes.
