Sometimes in a family system, it is not just one person who is having problems and difficulty. And others reactions and actions can be influenced on another. I have worked in Family Therapy for 20 years, in people's homes, schools, community, and an outpatient setting. Construction of a family genogram where all members share their history, strengths, weaknesses, wants and needs can be beneficial. I help families learn and use positive communication and respect each other. Expressing feelings appropriately and assertively, not aggressively, is the key to a happy and healthy family. All need to help to make the family unti work.

Families have as many dynamics as there are members. Each family has its own system to handle life's challenges. Sometimes, some of these systems do not operate effectively. Families are systems made up of individuals much like the transmission in your car. If a gear is damaged, it wears on the other parts. If you only replace the damaged gear, the other parts will soon wear the new gear into the shape of the old. Family therapy produces long lasting changes because it rebuilds the whole system instead of just fixing one part!

Family Counseling is extremely important and works wonders. If only one member of a football team learns the plays, there would be no teamwork or EFFECTIVE communication. It takes courage and discipline and LOVE for your family to take the time out for Family Counseling. Our therpaist will listen to each family member and help to identify teh weaknesses and strengths within that family. It is amazing how many families change dramatically after communicating in a safe, peaceful environment. We teach each family member how to be a part of the team and make successful and longlasting changes.

Every family member is affected by the behaviors of the other members. Although there may be an “identified patient” (the one with the biggest and most obvious problems), those behaviors are in some ways supported by the actions of others. I help each family member to understand his or her role within the family, to communicate in healthy ways, and to resolve problems so the family move can forward and remain connected. Conflict is a part of life, but when it is resolved successfully it can bring families closer rather than dividing them. As a parent, you will learn to function with an appropriate level of authority, while children learn to thrive within your family’s unique system.

Family relationships are hard and demanding and frustrating. We strive for peace and harmony in our homes and often find ourselves angry, in tears and feeling powerless. I work with nuclear families, blended families and adoptive families who are living in chaos. I educate parents on setting appropriate limits and boundaries and STICKING TO THEM while also teaching kids how to have respect, follow rules as well as having an appropriate voice and getting their needs met. You WILL see positive results; bringing structure and balance into the home is the bare minimum you will experience, when you find yourselves laughing together as a family, you will know you have arrived.

Typically, family therapy will bring the entire family together in therapy sessions. However, it may be that individuals in the family also see the therapist alone. There may also be times when individuals who are not a member of the family (such as a teacher or school counselor) participate in a therapy session with the family if their participation would be of benefit to the family. We can help your family learn how to better solve problems and how to better express thoughts and feelings. In family therapy, family members will learn about family roles and rules. Family members will examine behavior patterns and learn to identify issues that cause conflict.

The focus of my family therapy work is the family as a whole. Working on the relationship between family members is more effective than just treating the person that is supposed to be in need of treatment. From my perspective, family therapy work sees individuals in relationships to others. As a result, the attention shifts from the symptomatic individual and problem is seen as the family as a whole. The goal of my family therapy work is to help establish a “functional family” – one in which needs and the desired goals of closeness, identity, self-expression, and meaning are met.

Sometimes family members find it very difficult to communicate with each other. Adolescents may offer challenges that the family finds overwhelming. Parents may be sandwiched between grandparents and their children. One member of the family may have a mental illness that causes a lot of stress. There are many reasons why a family requests family therapy. This therapy may be short term. It can include all members of the family or some members of the family. I help the family develop skills they can use to improve relationships and move through stressful times.

When I see the family, I ask each one how they view the situation and how it affects them and the whole family. With parenting issues, I will see the child or teen alone and then the parents. I teach parents ways of listening to each other and understanding where each one is coming from. Once they validate each other, I help them problem solve using possible strategies with their child or young adult. These strategies will depend on the issue whether their child is experiencing symptoms of hyperactivity, addictions, learning processing difficulties, acting out in a new blended family, etc. Then I bring the family together for the parents to set limits on the child or young adult.

A family is a living organism, and when one member is in pain or confusion the whole family unit is part of that pain or confusion--sometimes as part of the cause, and always as a potential part of the cure. I offer families help in seeing how family members may contribute to each other's suffering and, more importantly, how they can help each other reduce the suffering.

In family therapy I meet with any number of family members together as a way to build understanding between family members and resolve conflicts that may exist. This tends to be a very active and dynamic interaction where each member is given the opportunity to express their views and concerns in a neutral environment. I, in turn provide feedback and help to clarify the issues.

By sitting down together, learning to listen to one another and allowing me to help you sort out your differences, you can begin to relate to one another in a new way. My goal is to provide a calm and safe environment where each family member expresses his or her point of view and conflicts are resolved through understanding and consensus.
