The family is made up of individuals. Yet the family itself is a unit, an organism, a system of moving parts. Every member is a moving part in the whole of the family. When one moving part stops moving or moves in an entirely different direction, the family unit is affected. For this reason, it is important when working with families that I ideally work with all members of the family. I bring in family members to counseling sessions individually, sometimes in pairs, sometimes all together. I help families learn to communicate and interact in a way that is harmonious, respectful and effective.

No safer place. No better time. Because family is not an organization but an organism, when one part is hurting or out of sorts, the entire organism is affected. It's easy to play the blame game, and attempt to segment off a family member's issue from the lives of the others. Like it or not, we are all connected, and all have a part in the health and solution of the problem or trouble. I can help you come together to use the collective resources of each family member to benefit the whole, and help with the healing. Family is perhaps the greatest shaper of our identity and values, and therefore is worth the investment and priority to keep it as healthy and vibrant as possible.

I limit my family therapy, including grief therapy and counseling for caretakers to when there is a disruption of the family unit due to illness or injury, or the death of a family member. Early in my career I worked both in the areas of psycho-oncology and with the adjustment reactions of both family members and significant others to spinal cord and other severe and debilitating injuries in family members or other people they loved and cared about.

Throughout our lives, there are numerous life circumstances that can place a strain on relationships within our families. As a therapist, I serve as a support system and a guide to help families communicate and work together more effectively to overcome what challenges them the most. These challenges may include but are not limited to the following: family life transitions, such as empty nest, bringing baby home, getting a new job, job loss, and caregiver stress as well as parent-child difficulties, blended-family concerns, grieving loss of loved one, chronic illness, and separation and divorce. I am here to help your family

I work with families of all shapes and sizes to develop communication skills in order to effectively connect with each other. This might involve parent coaching to help parents learn strategies to address challenging issues with their children, or sibling counseling to help siblings get along better. I will help families set goals for their relationships and work towards those goals.

Family therapy is an important part of the recovery process because it is a time in which broken familial relationships can be mended. During sessions, the family will have a chance to share how your addiction has affected their lives. Additionally, family members will learn more about how they can be supportive for their loved one. We’ll provide your loved ones with connections to community resources to have access to additionally.

I enjoy working with families and believe when one member chooses to do the dance of relationships differently other members will be forced to change their own steps. I look at the family system and not any one person as the identified patient. Family members can learn to have a voice and become healthier individually which contributes to a healthy family system.
