While I do family therapy with my clients, it is something that I do not jump right into. Usually a parent will call to bring his/her son into see me. The son is my primary client and it is important to me to get to know him and start to establish a relationship. Over time, I will discuss with him the benefits of bringing parents and even siblings into the session. I have found that if I bring the family in too soon, I often lose the trust and relationship with my primary clients. In family therapy, I use a systems approach and focus not only on the individual issues for each family issue, but also watch closely to see how the family interacts with one another.
