As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist I specialize in treating families seeking help for various reasons. Even though families go though predictable developmental stages, often times they struggle to adjust as they transition to a different phase of life. Other times something tragic or unexpected happens and family roles might get reversed, boundaries blurred, relationships and dynamics changed. In either case, family therapy can be very helpful when families don't know how to move forward and get stuck in cycles of interaction that keep them in conflict.

My approach to family therapy is heavily influenced by the work of Murray Bowen. Briefly, Bowen believed families are a system unto themselves, with each member influencing the lives of the others they are connected to. I think working with a family is both challenging and exciting, because seeing change in one member often results in the whole group realizing aspects of themselves they had not known before. When working with a family system I also believe parents should be parents first (not friends) and that children should be children... a lot of confusion happens when these lines are blurred. In therapy, looking at relational, communication and behavioral patterns are imperative.

The dynamics of a family are unique and complicated. It is important that in all sessions each member is heard. Family systems therapy regardless of the problem whether "individual" or a "family issue," involving the family in solutions often benefits clients. As a family and couples counselor my ability to influence sessions is in a way that catalyses the strength, wisdom and support of a wider system is crucial for positive outcomes. With over ten years of experience as a drug and alcohol counselor understanding the impact that substance abuse has on every individual in the family system is beneficial in helping family gain awareness and knowledge.
