I teach family members a skill called the Intentional Dialogue to help improve family communication. Often family members don't feel heard, that what they say matters, understood and that others know what they are feeling. The Intentional Dialogue allows each family member to share their 'side of the story' in a safe environment without fearing being judged or criticized. When this happens family members start to work as a team rather than be adversarial.

When I work with teens, I do like to keep the parents involved. Sometimes, my work with a young family member reveals patterns within the family system that cannot be resolved effectively by working with just that family member. By having everyone in the family unit to share perspectives, concerns, we uncover assumed roles, responsibilities, and labels that may be dysfunctional for the family system.

Family therapy in my practice is focused on how members of a family unit interact with eachother. Units can include couples, parents and chidren of all ages, siblings, or seniors. Issues may cover such probems as explosive or abusive behavior, parenting problems, school related issues, addictions, anxiety, or depression. In this process members learn to listen to others empathically, articulate their needs effectively and find cooperative solutions wherever possible.

During Family Therapy we deal with: patterns of communication (the way people in the family talk to each other); anger (how that sabotages the family); correcting dysfunctional patters, and negotiation (how to work out things so that everybody feels O.K. about the solutions). During family counseling families learn how to deal with crisis as well conflict management techniques. Also included are effective parenting skills for both children as well as teenagers. Therapy needs to have practical strategies and to be as short term as possible.

Family problems affect everyone in the family-from the oldest down to the youngest family member. Working with as few as two family members, I can help you and your family resolve conflict, emotional cut-offs, and negative communication patterns. Long term unresolved issues often create present day conflict and misunderstandings that affect everyone in the family. Therapy can help uncover and resolve those issues as well as work through the current family issues.

You can learn to reconnect with your children, your parents, your siblings. You can heal past wounds and strengthen your common bonds. You can listen and be heard by those most important to you. I am always amazed by the power of family therapy to do this and more. As a trained family therapist, I can help mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, siblings and cousins feel accepted and understood. Each relationship is unique and needs an approach that specifically focuses on the emotional content inherent to that relationship experience. Therapy can supply the tools but the individuals must do the work themselves to create change that will transform that relationship into an experience with improved comunication and tender rather than adverserial exchanges

We have our closest, longest-lasting, and most complicated relationships with family. When there is divorce, remarriage, addiction, mental illness or other dysfunction it can become even more complicated. With my Family Systems perspective I can help you understand how your family helped to form the person that you are, and help you untangle yourself from the dysfunction and heal the relationships that are important to you.

Family life is a multi-layered experience for each person. No two family members experience family life, or the relationships within the family, in exactly the same way. For this reason, family therapy is a very active, dynamic process. Although several family members may see me initially to explain what they think is problematic, I like to see the entire family together as soon as possible. My work with families focuses on helping each person explain their needs and hear how others in the family feel hurt and misunderstood. Reducing the stress and conflict within the family is the purpose of learning in sessions how to communicate clearly.
