Many families encounter stressful times and difficulties, which is to be expected as most families go through many obstacles together. My approach focuses on the family as a living a breathing system where every member of the family impacts the entire family unit in different ways. I work to help you in identifying the patterns your family has developed that are no longer serving the family as a whole and working to change those old patterns. Family therapy not only benefits the overall family relationship; it can also help individual members of the family address specific issues and improve their relational skills in and outside of the family.

Family therapy is a specialty; it's best undertaken by providers having specialized training in the field. My supporting program in graduate school was in Family Social Science. I treat families from a theory called "Contextual Family Therapy" which honors inter-generational loyalties and the responsibilities of each generation to the next one coming up. Family dynamics can sometimes be messy and challenging. Too often families don't seek treatment for the whole unit but instead have just one person identified as the problem. Real change occurs when the family dynamic and system make change. I can help you unravel some of the knots most families encounter from time to time.

Family systems are very interesting and very powerful. We learn to view the world based on the perceptions we learned as we grew up. Many people have developed wonderful skills for managing life, but no family is perfect. Working with Peg at Spirit of Hope Counseling Center you will learn about family systems, be grateful for what you have taken away from your family, and learn new strategies for faulty beliefs or coping strategies learned along the way.

Here are some tips to deal with problems that cause family discord: Keep a healthy marital relationship as parents are the main strength which binds a family together. Making adjustments and maintaining intimacy is necessary to grant focus to the children. Spending quality time with the children ensures that they are emotionally secure. Showing compassion and understanding helps you to concentrate on the family rather than on yourself. Determine your potential in full and become more productive towards establishing greater relationships within your family. Parent/Child relationships may be improved by parents willing to hear out what their child has to tell them. Family therapy can help.

Families are composed of different personalities -- not always compatible. Through therapy family members can identify their differences and learn ways to negotiate their experiences with each other. It also helps parents clarify their parenting roles and empower them as parents.
Parents tend to identify more closely with the child(ren) most resembling their personality and need to learn appropriate communication styles and needs of those children resembling the other parent.

My experience with hundreds of families has taught me there are many avenues to growth and health. My abilities to connect with both adults and children have helped me hear family members' losses and accompanying hopes for change. Families wish for change, despite the many mis-interpretations that therapists make at times about "resistance." They may not wish for the changes the therapist wishes for however; rather their own changes.

My training is in Marriage and Family Therapy. In a nutshell, this means that I believe that the family that you grew up in, and the relationship patterns and rules that affected your family, have a profound impact on who you are today.
For instance, how did your family deal with conflict? Were they stand off-ish or affectionate? Critical or nurturing? Where you allowed to fail in your family? Were you accepted for being you?
All of these questions help us explore your past and how it relates to your life in the present. It also helps guide you in creating goals, and changing what isn’t working effectively for you in your life right now.

As a MFT, family therapy entails looking at the family as a unit or "system", and identifying how the members' interactions affect the whole family. This approach takes pressure off the identified problem and invites families to work together for the benefit of everyone. Family therapy can benefit families going through significant changes/challenges such as divorce, loss, illness, conflicts, blended families, adoption, natural disasters and many more. Many families are greatly strengthened and have experience a sense of togetherness by working toward the goal of famly unity and peace. There are specific skills used in family therapy resulting in an effective and powerful experience.

All therapists at Soul Work Counseling are trained in various theories of family therapy. We treat families of all types; nuclear families, blended families, families with single parents, nontraditional families, adoptive families, families facing chronic illness, mental illness, significant conflict, dealing with the loss of a loved one or a history of trauma or emotional abuse from within or outside of the family. We believe that families can change their patterns of relating to one another and work together to create a healing environment where individual members reach a fuller potential than they could on their own, building trust between members that have begun to doubt one another.

Do you dread returning home after work? Is there constant conflict or disrespect that leaves you feeling drained and exasperated? You don't have to live this way. Whether you want to work on parenting skills or communication, I want to help your family learn to adjust to the transitions that are normal in families. All members must learn to adjust to children growing up and wanting more independence which can look like rebellion. Blended families have additional challenges with learning new family rules and roles. I can help your family with these adjustments so that your home is a comfortable place to live.

In family therapy those who have problems individually or relationally may be powerfully helped by the assistance of family members. Unfortunately the power of the family has often been abused and thus problems have been made worse. In my role as a family therapist I help family members understand their own family dynamics.Through the use of role play, teaching and modeling I assist families in how they can best get organized to restore either individuals or relationships back to a place of love and trust. I teach about communication, forgiveness and conflict resolution.I provide plenty of encouragement and creative ideas to bridge gaps in relationships in the interest of restoring love.

Family therapy is highly effective for depression, addictions, anxiety, unresolved grief, ADHD, coping with health problems, and parenting problems for all kinds of childhood and adolescent problems. My approach to family therapy involves helping a family to communicate and listen more effectively, better manage feelings, learn to better negotiate, effectively set limits, develop problem-solving skills, reduce stress as well as increase cohesion in your family. Family therapy often uses homework assignments to help the family practice the skills that are taught in the session. My approach is low key, supportive and focuses on practical things that family member can do resolve problems.

Families are often faced with their own specific challenges and the results of working through these challenges can be very rewarding and offer a more peaceful experience for the family as a whole. Seeing how a specific family organizes itself and works through challenges (or doesn't!) together can shed the light upon ways where families can grow and develop new ways of working together, no matter what the issue. You can choose your spouse and friends, but family you are stuck with forever... Why not make the best of it?

The family you grow up in teaches you how to interact with people you love. Family relationships often reflect unconscious patterns of relating passed down from generation to generation. When these patterns result in hurt and misunderstanding, family therapy is an opportunity for change. If you're uncomfortable with how you feel in your family, or how you act with family members or loved ones, reflecting on the patterns you've learned will bring you the freedom to choose how to relate, instead of being in reactive mode. I create a safe place where family members have the opportunity to learn to express needs and support each other in healthy ways.
