I view families each as a unique mobile--all the parts interconnected and if one moves (changes), all the others react. Family therapy involves recognizing how each person affects and is affected by each other, and building on each one's and the family's strengths while helping everyone to change the self-defeating, not constructive patterns they engage in that perpetuates the crises and distress felt. I find it is often useful to not just work with the family as a whole, but also at times work with the individuals and the relationships between parts of the system. Regardless of the severity and the specific areas of problems (inlcuding when addictions exists), they can be corrected.

I do family therapy for issues related to children 18 and above. In such a context I will bring everyone together and create a safe supportive atmosphere where people can hear one another and learn how to respond in more productive ways that lead to increased feelings of closeness and decreased conflict. Clients report that their family ties are much stronger as a result of our work.

From the time we are born we take cues as to how to think act and feel from our family. As we grow older we become aware of our own separate thoughts and feelings. In some families, independent thinking is encouraged with healthy boundaries that allow for self-expression. In other families, children are taught, to take their cues as to what thoughts and feelings others think they should have. Human beings, struggle for balance, attempting to belong to the group without losing self in the process. We can love our families and honor that unique bond, while still learning to stand as an individual with a strong sense of self. It is with this dynamic in mind that I try to work with families.

The family is where we learn how to be in the world. Parents are the role models in their every action. What are you passing down to your children? How do you want your children to be in the world? The gift of the family sets the foundation for the child. What gifts would you like to give your children? Would that be love, compassion or anger and self-hatred? If there are disruptive behavior patterns in the family, now is the time to learn different ways of interacting with one another.
Victor Wiesner, PhD, LPC, NCC, CCMHC
Much like the sophisticated inner workings of a mechanical clock, family members operate as a whole. Nobody operates in a vacuum. We develop our self identity largely from those we live with. Similarly, our belief system is informed by our family. People often take on psychological roles in the family. These roles shape our very identify - our thoughts, our behavior, and our feelings. Systems thinking is unique to family counseling. Transgenerational therapy is a form of family counseling that involves extended family members. Family therapy can help each member see the bigger picture and put the pieces of the puzzle together. I spent 7 years focusing on families while working with youth.
Emilio Jimenez, MA, LPC
Family therapy is an approach to counseling which specializes in treating families and their relationships. Everyone gets their needs heard and learns how to interact effectively with the other members of the family. Family therapy strengthens relationships, strengthens communication skills, strengthens trust between family members, deals with parenting, deals with infidelity, deals with divorce, deals with blended family issues, strengthens understanding, etc. In short, family therapy strengthens each member of the family. They each become a productive member.

Family therapy can be an important aspect of helping a young adult heal from an eating disorder. If you have a family member struggling with an eating disorder, we can help your family work together to support the recovery process. Our approach can not only help your child or partner, but help strengthen bonds within the family and increase effective communication, compassion and understanding.

At Achievebalance.org we often hear, "How do I get a family member or a spouse to go to therapy?" or "I know my teenager needs help but I can't make him/her go to therapy." Individuals of any age often resist therapy because no one likes to feel like they have a problem or that they are the 'problem' in the family. Telling your child/spouse/adolescent that the FAMILY needs help is the first step to healing. At Achievebalance.org we have several therapists to choose from and each has a particular specialty. Children, adolescents, and adults benefit from a specialized therapist and families benefit because everyone is working together.

None of us exists in a vacuum. We all come from families who leave a distinct impression on who we are and what we achieve in life. There are times when the family is integral in overcoming obstacles to a life fulfilled. This can be because of problems within the family, leaving its members struggling to achieve their goals. Likewise, the family can often assist an individual through a time of personal struggle, providing a unique web of support.

I have formal training in family therapy and I have studied several approaches to optimally assist families to resolve their issues, communicate better and to assist a family member who is having problems. A family is a system and each member of the family is an important part of the family system. Family therapy benefits all family members because they can improve their communication skills, stop scapegoating a certain family member, find peace and happiness in the family structure and improve the quality of life for all family members. Make an investment in your family by participating in positive family therapy which will assist all family members to find their happiness.
