Each family member plays a role in the family system. Each is different and expected to act as a "team." When the team approach works, the family works at it's best. However, many family members act as though they are on opposite teams. Conflict is present, then oftentimes, detacment and rebellion. Working with a therapist as a family can help identity the role each member is playing and how they work in the family system. There are many ways to work with families and couples. A very straightforward approach involved learning and applying new ways of communicating. One such approach was initially called Non-Violent Communication and has since been termed compassionate communication. When working with children and youth, the therapist cannot ignore the family system in which the child lives. I work with parents in multiple ways to help support youth in treatment, which may include separate parent sessions, co-parenting sessions, systemic family therapy, or Filial Therapy, a play therapy practice that coaches and guides parents in special play sessions with their child to decrease unwanted behaviors, improve relationships and communication, increase the child's emotional vocabulary, and increase the child's self-esteem.
