Family systems therapy draws on systems thinking in its view of the family as an emotional unit. When systems thinking—which evaluates the parts of a system in relation to the whole—is applied to families, it suggests behavior is both often informed by and inseparable from the functioning of one’s family of origin. Families have challenges for a variety of reasons. Sometimes parents struggle with kids because of challenges they experienced growing up. Each family has a history of the rules that govern interaction within a family. These rules may be known to at least some degree but may not be spoken about. Rules are often passed down from one generation to the next and conflict can occur when two people come together in forming their own family. A conflict can also occur in a blended family because of remarriage or the formation of new family unit. Therapy involves understanding how those rules came about and then addressing how those rules work or do not work within the current family unit and making decisions about how to better interact together.

I will work with families that find themselves in a dynamic they are unable to change on their own. I will teach them how family systems work and guide them through the process of reconciliation and redemption. This may be a combination of individual, couples or group sessions. My background in mediation also equips me to facilitate group discussion and foster an environment of trust.
