Families are just a group of people with individual thoughts and issues. It is helpful to work together because so many of the issues are triggered by the people we care most about and want to love us. Family work can be much quicker and easier as each member sees clearly how they impact the whole. There is very rarely a member of a family that can heal alone, they are partially the product of their environment, and need to see how they impact and are impacted by the family. I find family meetings very important for the validation of younger members, or those who feel intimidated by the authority in the group.

The first step in my family therapy is figure out what has changed in the dynamics of the family. There are many reasons that cause a family to become unbalanced. There are times that roles may need to change and change in itself can be very difficult for many people. It may be that separate sessions are held so that this one person can learn to communicate their thoughts and feelings to the rest of the family. The goal is to always have the family work together to learn to become a cohesive and authentic unit.

Families are a system of relationships where each person affects every other person in the family. Family Therapy involves as many family members as possible, including the children, in order to open up communication, facilitate team work and provide a safe place to express emotions leading to problem solving and closeness in the family. If necessary, extended family can be included too.

Can some one PLEASE give me an example or definition of a DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY? I think it might look like the families we've all grown up in. What does your family of origin look like? How does that affect how you run the family you are in today? Lets look together at ways of communication, listening, and loving each other. "But your families different you say?" I welcome the challenge. Let's all put on gloves and high rubber boots and jump into the muck together - shall we? Lets face it, families are WORK, real WORK!! It is better to worker smarter than harder. Let me share my tool box with you, and see if you would like to adapt to using some of these tools in your household.

Listening with love is a gift that family members can give to each other. Carey can help you to have meaningful conversations that lead to desired changes in the family. Relying on systems theory and effective communication practices, emotional bonds can be strengthened and misunderstandings corrected. Carey's goal is for each family member to have a positive counselling experience with their hope for change realized. Family members can work toward interpersonal goals on their own in session or invite family members to join them.

I have found that Gottman Approaches can be useful in systemic approaches such as family therapy. The power of how one impacts another cannot be underestimated. My strategy begins by building individual trust with individual members with the goal of bringing people together in meaningful ways. I believe families want to be supportive, they just loose their way sometimes and need to be pointed back in the right direction.

Family therapy can be beneficial if you are struggling with parenting, bullying concerns, or conflict within your family to name a few. Family therapy can also be helpful during or after divorce or seperation as well. At West Coast Counselling, we work to support each member of the family and don't take sides. We work to address whatever concerns you may have and develop a plan to conquer these struggles.

My hope for clients who are experiencing challenges in their family relationships is that they will create greater understanding and acceptance of one another. Clients will build healthy communication skills that will assist them in resolving current issues, as well as preventing future conflicts from occurring. It is my hope that each family member will develop a willingness to accept the uniqueness of the other members in the family, as well as a willingness to listen and understand one another. Through this process of learning how to come together with openness, each person will be affirmed that he/she matters and has a voice in the family.

As a trained Marriage and Family Therapist, working with families for over eight years, I have the experience, knowledge, and skills to offer your family quality care. Traditional, modern, and unique family formations all require a thorough understanding of issues that arise. Conflict, loss, hurt, and anger are normal, but left unresolved, the family becomes wounded and cannot heal. I will first explore with you what needs to change. We will then examine the current dynamics, family history, culture, values, core beliefs, strengths, and resources. Amazingly, family work with a family therapist often requires fewer sessions than individual work, and the changes can be more lasting.

Families can be the source for support, attachment and safety. However, for many people families can also be the source of conflict, stress and disappointment. Family therapy aims to create a safe place for all family members in order to explore the conflict and create/find creative solutions that meet the needs of all family members. My approach is to make sure that each person feels respected and heard throughout the counselling process. Each family member plays a valuable role and has something special to contribute; therefore the solution to the conflict can only be resolved with the input from all family members.

In working with a family, there are many beneficial activities: helping people to build awareness of themselves and their role in the family, how to move out of reaction (attack or flee), learn new skills, develop healthy coping habits, learn 'focusing' as a self help tool and to deepen relationships, building group strength, etc. I work with the whole family as well as with the individuals.
