Imagine a family as a tree with branches, roots, trunk representing parts of the immediate and extended family. When working with families, all elements are considered. Usually there is a request for family therapy due to one of it's members in crisis, often a child. However, when an analysis of need is done it becomes apparent that more than one member of the family needs help in adjusting, growing and learning new behaviours. Families are a natural system under which the members of the family relate and interact. It is important to learn which are this interactions that create the specific system in which the family lives. As well the patterns of their attachment show how they communicate with each other and how the different events of the family's life will be experienced and dealt with.

Family dynamics are often complex minefields of well practiced relations with roles that are well defined through years of pattern behaviour. To change any part is to change the system and the system isn't easy to change. Families can benefit from having a third party help identify these patterns and sort out the positive from the negative with the ultimate goal of finding new ways of interacting and being that can hopefully expose the greatest opportunity for the family system to work for all its members. In family therapy, the focus is on the interactions of those that are affected by the presenting concern and strengthening relationships of the family system. Although some concerns may appear to apply to one individual, involvement of family can have positive benefits on both the individual and overall family functioning. While family therapy may often focus on child-parent relationships, other loved ones such as grandparents, caregivers, siblings etc. are invited to attend where you see fit.
