In working with a family, there are many beneficial activities: helping people to build awareness of themselves and their role in the family, how to move out of reaction (attack or flee), learn new skills, develop healthy coping habits, learn 'focusing' as a self help tool and to deepen relationships, building group strength, etc. I work with the whole family as well as with the individuals.

As a trained Marriage and Family Therapist, working with families for over eight years, I have the experience, knowledge, and skills to offer your family quality care. Traditional, modern, and unique family formations all require a thorough understanding of issues that arise. Conflict, loss, hurt, and anger are normal, but left unresolved, the family becomes wounded and cannot heal. I will first explore with you what needs to change. We will then examine the current dynamics, family history, culture, values, core beliefs, strengths, and resources. Amazingly, family work with a family therapist often requires fewer sessions than individual work, and the changes can be more lasting.

A family is a system of relationships and though we have choice, sometimes it is difficult to see those choices or find our way out of a situation. Yvonne uses Family Systems Therapy (Bowen) to examine the relationships and triangles of our multigenerational system. This is not process of blaming or fault-finding, but one of illumination and self-determination so that we can differentiate ourselves and live the best life possible.
Shawn McNabb, B.A., M.Ed. (Counselling Psychology), R.C.C.
I have found that Gottman Approaches can be useful in systemic approaches such as family therapy. The power of how one impacts another cannot be underestimated. My strategy begins by building individual trust with individual members with the goal of bringing people together in meaningful ways. I believe families want to be supportive, they just loose their way sometimes and need to be pointed back in the right direction.

Can some one PLEASE give me an example or definition of a DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY? I think it might look like the families we've all grown up in. What does your family of origin look like? How does that affect how you run the family you are in today? Lets look together at ways of communication, listening, and loving each other. "But your families different you say?" I welcome the challenge. Let's all put on gloves and high rubber boots and jump into the muck together - shall we? Lets face it, families are WORK, real WORK!! It is better to worker smarter than harder. Let me share my tool box with you, and see if you would like to adapt to using some of these tools in your household.

Whatever difficulties people encounter in their lives, they more often than not involve family. In a sense, our families are always with us, impacting our lives, affecting our choices, influencing our emotions. And thus all therapy is potentially family therapy, but especially if it chooses to recognize the emotional importance of family and works to resolve the connective issues and unfinished business that arise in relation to family. Therapy that understands the significance of family -- and its capacity for emotional healing -- can bring resolution and change to bear at whatever point in the life course the need arises.

Doug Hilton, RCC
I come from both an Adlerian and Gestalt approach to family therapy. I focus on the encouraging aspects of the family and try to offer experiences in the session that will lead the family members to not only conceive of things getting better, but to have experiences that have proven that to them. I focus on roles in the family and how each person is interacting with the others in his or her role. I teach in direct and simple ways the methods for clearer communication and for resolving power struggles in the family.

Families are a system of relationships where each person affects every other person in the family. Family Therapy involves as many family members as possible, including the children, in order to open up communication, facilitate team work and provide a safe place to express emotions leading to problem solving and closeness in the family. If necessary, extended family can be included too.

Deborah Nelson, M. Sc. Psychology, RPC, MPCP
Families operate within a system with the confines of individual expectations. When expectations are challenged or not met, family member resort to what makes the individual feel safe and comfortable whether it is placating, withdrawing, over accommodating, or demanding. Families operate as a system and each action creates either a positive or negative reactions. Each family member operates as part of the greater system and learning how to communicate effectively, listen actively, and clarify what is heard, will help overcome the misinterpretations that cause hurt feelings, withdrawing and anger.

My hope for clients who are experiencing challenges in their family relationships is that they will create greater understanding and acceptance of one another. Clients will build healthy communication skills that will assist them in resolving current issues, as well as preventing future conflicts from occurring. It is my hope that each family member will develop a willingness to accept the uniqueness of the other members in the family, as well as a willingness to listen and understand one another. Real Solutions to Real Challenges. Common Sense Techniques.
Martin very much enjoys working with families and children. Families are systems operating in close quaters, therefore upsets and miscommunications are natural and should be expected. They can be a source of extreme disappointment and pain or they can be opportunitiesfor growth. Martin is trained in Adlarian family therapy and uses Gestalt approaches to families. He has facilitaed parenting groups and worked with children as young as three years old and granparents who were in their eighties. It is his experience that families can enjoy, help, and grow together and most of the time it takes far less work than what they expected.
Kim White, M.A.,RCC, CPCC
We start and end made up of the most intimate others who shape us as we grow. My graduate work was grounded in family system's therapy, an orientation that looks at the many patterns that play out between all members of our family unit. A family approach to therapy explores these patterns, varied boundaries and the inevitable triangulation that occurs between family members. Family therapy assists us in making visible the patterns that contribute to the drama,...good and bad, and offer us a way to interrupt non-productive patterns and replace them with more functional ways of being a family unit.

I have extensive training in Family Therapy as one of the first graduates from Pacific Coast Family Therapy Association, Vancouver in 1985. Since then I have helped many families deal with issues ranging from parenting, fertility difficulties, extended family conflict, blended families, troubled teens, launching young adults, loss of a family member and everything in between. As a Family Systems therapist I will help your family uncover dysfunctional patterns and replace them with healthy strategies to express your love and commitment to one another. This will involve developing healthy boundaries and learning how to communicate more respectfully and effectively with each other.
Tanya Elez, MA (Psych), MMFT, RMFT
Family has a crucial formative influence on personality and future relationships and can be a major source of personal well being, and also a major source of stress. I am a registered family therapist, experienced in a variety of family related issues, such as parenting, family conflict, life transitions, and separated or blended families. Family therapy helps people develop stronger relationships, strengthen skills in managing family conflict, learn new ways of dealing with normal developmental issues and life transitions, and become able to create a family atmosphere that facilitates each member's optimal growth and functioning.
Kate Blassnitz, MSW, RSW, HTP
Families are the place where we bring so many expectations of ourselves, our children, our partners, our parents, our siblings...meaning that there's a lot of room for disappointments, hurts and frustration. Families can also be remarkable places for fun, kindness and support...meaning there's lots of room for love and learning about ourselves. We'll work together to put the tension and conflict into perspective and make room for the fun, kindness and support.
Mariette West, RN RCC BSN MA

Despite our best intentions, family relationships can become strained. Communication can break down. Even when enormous love and concern for our families is evident, conflict can still result. But, by exploring the aspects of family relationships we’ll show you how to understand your family’s core issues and address the reasons why difficulties arise. Build healthy bonds. Connect each member of your family. Let us give you the means to replace conflict and unhappiness with strength, support, and joy.
Kathleen Kaulback, RCC, Reg Social Worker, M.A., C.M.
I often open my family therapy sessions by asking each individual to briefly tell me how they would like this meeting to go. I ask them to address their statements when it is there turn to speak to the individual involved and to make eye contact. I ask the individual listener to not interrupt the speaker and sometimes to tell me back what the person has stated, I educate in ongoing sessions, theory regarding speaking directly to a family member and not getting others to pass on a message. I teach communication (listening) and role theory. This can be fun and I encougage laughter. I love this work.
