I have been doing grief counseling for twenty-five years and have written two books on surviving the loss of a loved one, "Transcending Loss" and "Hope and Healing" (in press). I teach grievers about the lifelong impact of grief and how to manage the pain. I also help grievers make meaning from loss, develop an ongoing connection to their loved one, and find healthy ways to integrate loss into life.

Grief & loss are experienced across a wide continuum. Some amount of loss happens each day--lost opportunities at work or to connect with family or friends for example. A few losses cause years of struggle--infertility, divorce, & illness might fall here. Other losses are rare yet so profound we are forever changed by the experience--the death of a child or unexpected loss of a beloved spouse are extraordinarily difficult. Letting my clients know they are not alone is critical. There are no expectations to feel a certain way, behave a certain way, or progress through any specific phases of grief. In this super fast paced world, I encourage my clients to slow down & trust their process.

You may be feeling like you have been sad too long or that people expect you to move on with your life. The sadness that goes with grief and loss is hard to bear and there is no timeline to when you should start feeling better. Sometimes its hard to seek support from those around you because you don't want to burden them or because you feel that they don't understand. I understand that grief takes its time and can help and support you as you try to make sense both of what happened and what is left.

From my perspective, how grief is experienced can differ significantly from person to person. Consequently, I place considerable emphasis on being present to whatever a person brings into the room whether it be profound sadness, anger, numbness, regret, self-blame, or any other emotion. I think it is very important to convey the willingness to bear witness without judgment. If a person appears stuck and is struggling to move out of a more complicated, entrenched experience of grief, my approach becomes more cognitive and solution focus without sacrificing the depth of presence I believe is necessary when offering service to someone suffering from such a profound loss.

Grief is the emotional response to loss. The loss can be a spouse, family member, or close friend, or it can be a lost job or a missed opportunity. Grief is a natural emotional response that has various predictable stages. While it is painful and upsetting it is the psyche’s way of moving through it and can result in personal growth and even transformation. My approach is to work with you in a confidential setting by talking about it and exploring together the meaning of the grief reaction and the various specific facets of your loss. I will help you get in touch with your own God given inner resources to cope with the loss and to move forward, and to adjust and adapt.
