I approach grief and loss first and foremost with a great deal of empathy. It is exceptionally painful to have lost someone or something. I find most patients keep that pain buried inside which impacts their daily functioning. I then try to encourage patients to allow the pain to surface. Once emotions are out they no longer drive us and we can, once again, be in the driver seat.
