When clients come to me suffering from grief and loss they all want to know the same thing: "How long will this last?" Unfortunately, there is no way to speed up the grieving process but there are many things we can do to slow it down or put it on hold. No one wants to do that. Nobody wants to grieve longer than necessary. It is my job as a clinician to provide a safe, accepting, compassionate environment for clients to talk about and feel the loss so they can begin to put the pieces back together and start to move forward. I've helped many clients do this over the years and would be honored to help as you walk through yours.

TLCounseling Services address Greif & Loss by utilizing the Elisabeth Kubler- Ross identified five linear stages of grief that most people are now familiar with. In addition we also utilized Psychologist J. W. Worden stage-based model for coping with the death of a loved one. He called his model the Four Tasks of Mourning. While bereavement/grief is not defined as a disorder it can lead to preexisting conditions like major depression, or repercussions associated with the trauma of a death, such as acute stress when caring for a loved one who it terminally ill and it can induce acute depression when someone you love suddenly dies. These therapies have proven to be the most effective.

Grief and loss counseling is a specialized form of therapy designed to assist those who are enduring the emotional and psychological pain associated with the passing of a loved one or other significant losses. It provides a secure and compassionate space for individuals to process their feelings, memories, and experiences related to the loss, guiding them through the bereavement process and assisting them in finding emotional coping mechanisms.

Grief and loss is an every day part of life. No one is taught how to grieve and it is an individualized process. Dealing with loss is one of the most stressful and difficult times in a persons life. Our hearts are broken and our lives are disrupted. There is no right or wrong way to grieve but sometimes a counselor or therapist can help the person find healthy ways to cope with the pain, find peace, and reach a point of acceptance and healing. My focus is to be completely present with each person, listen to their experiences, educate, and help them to understand their emotions and feelings without judgement.

Loss can be from the loss of a loved one through illness or death. Loss can also be associated with a change in life situation; for example a divorce or separation, a loss of a job or career, or a loss associated with change in life due to a decline in physical or mental functioning. These life changing events often become a time to reflect upon the overall meaning in life. It is a time that many people turn toward spiritual beliefs that comfort them and encourage them through these difficult times. This is an area that I will explore with you. If spirituality is not a part of your life experience I will look for beliefs that can sustain and support you through your specific crisis.
