As the Clinical Supervisor in the Bereavement Department I supervised approximately ten to fifteen therapist interns a year and provided intensive training on the topic of grief. The length of the grief process is different for everyone. There is no predictable schedule for grief. Although it can be quite painful at times, the grief process should not be rushed. It is important to be patient with yourself as you experience your unique reactions to the loss. With time and support, things generally do get better. However, it is normal for significant dates, holidays, or other reminders to trigger feelings related to the loss. Taking care of yourself, seeking support, and acknowledging your feelings during these times are ways that can help you cope.

There are times when our losses add up...I have seen numerous clients who have lost several significant people in their lives and then, after a time, their energy starts to diminish. It can take awhile for people to realize that these unresolved losses are the culprit. I actually relish the opportunity to help clients with these situations because we have tools to process the grief and loss, resulting in their feeling much better and ready to resume their lives! The secret is that unprocessed grief and loss require energy. We gently stimulate this stored energy so that it becomes free energy-which can then be used for living today.
