During such a difficult time in ones life it can be helpful to discuss the large range of emotions one may be feeling during a time of grief and loss. Working collaboratively with the client, open discussions of thoughts and feelings in a safe environment can help to normalize the grieving process and allow the client(s) to begin to move forward with their journey.

The Kubler-Ross model, 5 stages of grief is well known; less familiar to people is where they are in the process. When it comes to grief, I am quick to state that is different from other types of counselling. I describe grief as a natural process, as opposed to a corrective process. But there may be traumatic elements to a grief or loss that require special attention. I look for those elements; essentially to clean the wound and uncomplicate the healing process. The truth is when we grieve, we feel the other side of love and it can be more painful than imagined. This is a loss that is to be honored, and needs support not corrections.
