Clients often ask me what "type" of psychotherapy I practice. The answer to that question is complicated, and is perhaps best answered by "it depends". My own belief is that different types of problems benefit the most from different types of therapy, and that a therapist who offered the same treatment for every problem would be doing his clients a disservice. With some clients I am apt to use a more "behavioral" or "cognitive" focus with an emphasis on problem-solving, adaptive coping, and altering maladaptive thought and behavioral patterns. With other clients, I may use exercises that focus on self-awareness, focus on past trauma to achieve recovery or some other form of treatment.

Having extensive training and experience in psychotherapy is paramount; however, I also believe that what I can bring to your treatment as a human being is just as important. Being caring, validating, and attentive are qualities I strive towards as a therapist. I will be with you wherever you are, leading you from behind, to help you actively address your problems, to feel better and in control, and to find more joy in your life.

I have been a psychologist on the west coast and on the east coast-- and I want to tell you what I have learned through my travels. We are really so much the same. We want to be taken seriously by those we care about and tend to feel profound pain when we are ignored or taken for granted. Whether I am working with a couple or with an individual, these wishes are universal. Some people I help are struggling with severe emotional challenges and others are just trying to figure out how to live their lives in a more authentic way. I have an interpersonal and humanistic style and never lose sight that it is hard to trust a stranger even if they do have a bunch of diplomas on their wall.
