The psychologist is the most highly trained specialized mental health professional. A psychiatrist receives approximately 3 years training in psychiatry followed by the passage of a specialty psychiatry exam. However, a psychologist license requires a doctoral degree (approx 3 to 4 years of psychology training, after the previous 4 years of training in psychology required for a psychology bachelor's degree). Then a psychologist must graduate from a year's internship, followed by the passage of a comprehensive national exam. The psychologist is the ONLY mental health professional that is HIGHLY trained in providing psychological evaluations, in addition to expert counseling.
