My psychotherapy/counseling approach involves a balance of heart reflection and practical action. If you are off balance on either end, I think growth slows down. Too much action, without understanding why you are doing your behaviors tends to lead towards exchanging one unhelpful behavior for another unhelpful behavior. But if you only focus on inward reflection, and do not work on practical changes, you only walk away with insight. Insight alone does change people. Yet combining the two can be a powerful combination of heart change which is reflected in changed behaviors.

Many compare our emotions and/or history to an onion that needs to be peeled away layer by layer. There's some merit to that, and both involve tears at times. Fortunately, for people who delve in to gain a deeper understanding of how they've gotten to where they are, eventually the tears fade away and the new understanding and insights lead to a more satisfying life.
