As a Psychotherapist, I help persons to identify, create and develop meaning from their life experiences. I believe that therapy is a deeply personal process of self-discovery – an ongoing journey towards health and wholeness…. For some persons, this means facing the bleeding wounds and scars of their childhood abuse. For other persons, this means taking the chance to more clearly define their life purpose and take greater control of their destiny. Whatever the reason, I believe that therapy is a powerful tool for anyone courageous enough to envision greater self-actualization, stronger self-identity, deeper intimacy and a more fulfilling life.

I provide a welcoming, comforting environment to explore a client's troubles and provide insight and various perspectives on an individual's situation in order to help that person grow and learn from these experiences. I have been able to help those going through a life transition or those who may have struggled with low-self esteem or with a relationship to heal and gain strength.

The first couple of meetings are an information gathering time which allows you to determine whether you are comfortable. It is important that you feel heard and like the relationship is a good fit. The therapeutic process often begins on an intellectual plane - aiming to identify areas of conflict - and progresses, in its purest form, into an emotional process that allows troublesome feelings to be worked out and appreciated in their full scope. The process is complicated because the scope of our feelings contains many layers, beginning with feelings we are fully aware of to very deep feelings outside of our awareness. Working with truth of our feelings, we are then liberated.

Psychotherapy is usually used with individuals to discover the causes of past and current problems. You will discover how past issues have impacted your current situation. This would include an in depth review of your past and exploring misinformation stored in your sub-conscious mind. You will discover that lies don't have to be true. As we change your mind your behavior and relationships will improve.

My theoretical approach is Solution Focused. I believe clients come into counseling searching for empowering solutions, problem clarification and alleviation of stress on some level. The solution focused approach is based on the principle that change is constant and by helping people identify the things that they wish to have changed in their lives, I can help clients to create a vision of what they hope to see for themselves. I focus on interrupting the cycle of destructive patterns long enough to bring some awareness to your small successes and helping you to repeat these successful things when the problem is not there or less severe.

Our approach to psychotherapy is to increase the individual's sense of his/her own well-being. We employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve couple and family relationships. This is done through exploring feelings, motivation and conflicts to help the client improve conscious understanding. We also help the client to increase self esteem and move life and relationships in a positive direction.

Length of time in therapy is individual depending on completion of homework, regularily scheduled and kept appointments, and readiness for treatment. The shortest period of time someone has been in therapy with Sue is one month. Which was with an adult patient already utilizing stress reduction techniques, that began experiencing symptoms following a robbery armed. The longest period of time someone has been in therapy with Sue has been two years. Whichs was with an adult patient who had experienced a severe childhood sexual trauma and two additional diagnosable disorders. Of course there are always exceptions in length of treatment. My Identity Renegotiation model of counseling celebrates the multiple, often conflicting identities that reside in each individual and his/her relationships. The goal of therapy is that the client will become more knowledgeable about those identities, aware of how identities are formed and changed, and adept in working with others to achieve greater self-acceptance and interpersonal success.

The work I do is my passion and this is quite evident from our first meeting. There are several reasons why clients seek me out for treatment. Probably the reason I hear most often is how quickly I am able to develop a strong, trusting rapport with whoever it is I am working with. Parents of adolescents often ask where my magic wand is as within an hour a resistant adolescent who is refusing to participate up until the moment he/she enters my office, is eager to make their next appointment. There is not one approach that will work for everyone. Being able to identify the most appropriate approach for the given client is essential for successful treatment.
