The transportation in and around Anaheim is very good.  There are two public bus systems, the Metro and OCTA, and two rail systems—Amtrak and Metrolink.1 There are a few different area airports to get to Anaheim.  First there is the John Wayne Airport which is located approximately 15 miles from Anaheim.  LAX and Ontario Airports are about 35 miles away, and the Long Beach Airport, which is about 20 miles away.  Any of these airports will help to get you closer to Anaheim.  There is also the Anaheim Transportation Network, which is a not-for-profit organization that provides shuttle service between the Disneyland Resort and the local area hotels.  The other not-for-profit transportation organization is Disney GOALS which provides daily free bus service for low income youth, allowing the youth to attend athletic competitions, which would otherwise not have an opportunity to access those activities.

Mental Health in Anaheim

With 35 percent of Anaheim's residents under the age of 18, it is a youthful and energetic city. Large Asian and Hispanic populations add to the city's vibrancy and culture.2 However, over 15 percent of Anaheim citizens live below the poverty level. Well over 35,000 people are homeless in Orange County, of which over 16,000 are children.3 Many homeless people struggle with mental health issues, yet are unable to receive the required care.

The Orange County government operates outpatient mental health clinics throughout Anaheim and the surrounding areas. The services provided at these clinics focus on the individual strengths of each client in order to empower them to make positive change and take an active role in planning and carrying out their treatment plan. Clients can partake in individual and group therapy, substance abuse treatment, crisis intervention, and for those with serious and persistent mental disorders, there is an acute inpatient psychiatric program. People in need of mental health care are encouraged to call the Orange County Health Department at 855-886-5400.4

Current Initiatives

The California Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) was originally passed by the state legislature in 2004. Since then, behavioral health care has been expanded and improved to meet the needs of people who otherwise might not receive the care they deserve. The cornerstone of the MHSA is known as Full Service Partnerships (FSPs). Essentially, these partnerships provide comprehensive resources to address everything from intensive therapy to housing to access to general healthcare. As a result of this program, incidence of homelessness has decreased, while education, access to care, and employment have all increased.5
