Established in 1966 as a planned community, Columbia, MD is now a city of just under 90,000 with families at its heart. The Columbia Association offers a variety of programs for children and teenagers at its Art Center. For children aged 6-11, a Kids and Clay class teaches basic clay-working techniques. A wheel-throwing class is offered to teenagers, aged 12-17. Another class aimed at teenagers focuses on journal keeping and stresses creative writing techniques. For the tiniest residents, there is a Music in Motion class for infants to four-year-olds and their mothers. In the summertime, the Columbia Association opens 27 swimming pools in different parts of the community to its residents. Each pool has both a regular pool and a wading pool and some also have hot tubs, slides or other amenities.1 Summer is also the time for the Association to offer an impressive array of camps to suit the interests of children and teenagers of all kinds.

Mental Health in Columbia

The Howard County Mental Health Authority provides free emergency assistance to those in the midst of a mental health crisis. Their Mobile Crisis Team responds to calls for help from local police that involve a mentally ill individual. After de-escalating the situation, the crisis team provides appropriate emotional support and, if necessary, transports the individual to the hospital for observation. The team also puts the individual's family in contact with local resources to ensure the proper treatments are provided. Various 12-step groups offer meetings at the Serenity Center for individuals who need support as they work to overcome an addiction. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous hold weekly meetings at the center for those who have developed a drug or alcohol addiction. Gambler's Anonymous also provides support each Tuesday evening. Emotions Anonymous and Overeaters Anonymous are two other groups that seek to help people on their path to recovery and wellness. Current Education

Howard County Public Schools offers educational programming for children of all ability levels. Students who display advanced intellectual or artistic abilities can participate in the district's Gifted and Talented Program. These advanced-level learning experiences challenge students to attain the highest level of achievement, while providing enriched experiences that meet their demand for an engaging and rigorous education. In addition to these academic considerations, the Gifted and Talented Program offers social and emotional support for gifted students so the highly abled have the skills required to have positive interactions with their peers.4 The district also supports the learning of disabled students in a variety of ways. Inclusion services ensure students with emotional, mental, developmental, or physical disabilities spend as much of their school day as possible with their regular education classmates. Supplemental programs provide the necessary accommodations for special education students to be successful. Students also receive guidance with regard to college or vocational training so they receive the instruction they need to obtain and maintain employment after high school.
