Columbia, the state capital of South Carolina, has around 125,000 people with the metropolitan area consisting of around 716,000 people. The city was named after Christopher Columbus but was not created until 1786. The first legislature meeting was held in Columbia as the new capital in 1790. Columbia was subsequently incorporated as a town in 1805 and then as a city in 1854. It is also thought to be one of the first planned cities in the United States. The colonial government set up a ferry system that ran across from the Santee River, connecting the Congaree River and the Congarees Fort, that was on the west bank of the Congaree River, with the settlements that were growing fairly rapidly.1 Another reason Columbia is an important area is that it is in the fall line of the Appalachian Mountains which provided a spot on the rivers for power to be generated.
