Coral Springs is located northwest of Fort Lauderdale with a population around 127,000 residents.  The city is considered part of the greater South Florida metropolitan area that has more than 5 million people residing there.  The city was chartered in 1963 and was first developed as a master-planned community by WCI Communities, formerly known as Coral Ridge Properties. Even though the name of the city may indicate that there are springs in the city, there are in fact no springs, but was named after the company who planned the community. The 1970’s through the 1990’s there was a lot of growth in the city.  The city was dreamed of after WWII during the real estate boom in southern Florida.  The land actually used to be a marsh but was drained by canals and levees in the late 1940’s.  Prior to developing the land, it was mainly used as a bean farm.

One of the most noticeable things about Coral Springs is that there are not a lot of tall structures in the city.  The highest building is a 12-story condominium and a few 10-story buildings.  There are also very strict landscaping and sign laws in effect, which has prevented McDonald’s from erecting the “golden arches” that are famous throughout the world.  It is the only place in the world without the golden arches as well. Other interesting restrictions include storage of recreational vehicles and boats, exterior paint colors, as well as roofing materials. This has helped the real estate values of the properties in the area to retain high values than in any other city in the county. There is a great push for revitalizing the downtown area, which resulted in the construction of One Charter Place in 2007, an area that houses retail, government and office space that takes up around 3 million square feet of space.1

Mental Health in Coral Springs

The abuse of medications prescribed to help patients with pain has been a growing problem around the nation, and particularly in Florida, where deaths related to opiate related deaths have risen dramatically over the past decade; it is the fastest growing public safety issue in the state and its most dangerous.2 Paralleling this, admission statistics at the Broward Addiction Recovery Center, located in Coral Springs, have also shifted. Over half of the patients now admitted to BARC are fighting an addiction to related substances. BARC offers a broad range of mental health services to adults over the age of 18, with a focus on addiction and comorbid conditions.3 To reach the Broward Addiction Recovery Center Admissions Office, call 954-357-4851.

Each family faces difficult decisions as their elder members become physically or mentally impaired. The Community Care for the Elderly (CCE) Program in Coral Springs assists adults of 60 years of age and older.4 Use of these services can help delay the need for placement in a nursing home. Some of the services offered include adult day care, respite care, and assisted living waivers. For further information, call 954-357-7488.

Current Initiatives

The Homeless Initiative Partnership program in Coral Springs is working with the community, using local funds as well as state and federal grants, to identify the needs of homeless residents and extend services to help meet those needs.5 The initiative will focus on improving housing availability for the mentally ill and those suffering from substance addiction, as well as those who are disabled. The initiative also aims to expand its available opportunities for mentoring.
