Mental Health in Lakewood

The central focus of the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado is to provide prevention, intervention, and postvention resources to individuals and families who have been impacted by the death of a loved one. Educational and outreach programs teach youth about the warning signs of suicide, and provide valuable information about how to seek help. The coalition also works with other non-profit agencies to effect change at the state government level in order to ensure that the state continues to provide funding for prevention and intervention programs, as well as mental health programs for at-risk youth. Individuals with a mental illness or a disability often have difficulty finding adequate employment. Being unable to find a job can be frustrating and cause a great deal of mental and emotional stress. Fortunately, Bayaud Enterprises offers many vocational services to Lakewood residents who have a mental or physical impairment. Comprehensive vocational assessments help identify an individual's strengths, interests, abilities and aptitudes. The Transistional Work Adjustment Program gives program participants real-world, paid work experiences in order to learn workplace protocols and expectations before seeking employment outside the agency. Participants also engage in exercises to build confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem in preparation for entrance into the workforce. For further details, call 303-830-6885.3

Immigrants to this country are no doubt excited about the prospect of pursuing the American dream and providing a better life for themselves and their family. Yet many immigrants must overcome financial, cultural, and economic barriers in order to make their dreams a reality. To assist in the transition of living in a new place, Jewish Family Service provides relocation programs to help individuals transition to self-sufficiency and overcome issues of diversity. Citizenship and language classes help immigrants assimilate to American culture. Access to food and financial assistance take the stress out of having adequate nutrition and shelter. Individuals can also participate in support programs that tend to emotional and mental health needs in order to improve overall wellbeing. For additional information, contact Jewish Family Service at 303-597-5000.4

Current Initiatives

Denver's Road Home is a comprehensive community initiative to end homelessness in the Denver metro area. In all, over 350 stakeholders that represent both public and private organizations developed the original recommendations for the initiative when it began in 2005. The program's housing-first plan focuses on increasing the number of emergency shelters available, as well as the number of transitional and permanent housing options. Also included are wraparound services that address the physical and mental health needs of individuals, as well as job skills and vocational trainings in order to help residents get back on their feet with adequate employment. By addressing the needs of the whole person, the initiative improves the likelihood that homeless residents will be able to improve their quality of life and escape the cycle of poverty.
