Los Altos is 37 miles south of San Francisco. It is a very small city, comprising just seven square miles. It originated as an area called Banks and Braes, but when the railroad entered the area in the early 1900s it became known as Los Altos. The nearby cities of Los Altos Hills, Palo Alto, Mountain View and Sunnyvale are similarly quiet suburban cities. The city boasts excellent public and private schools for families with children. The family can enjoy many outdoor activities, including Redwood Grove, a nature preserve with acres and acres of native plants and animals. Mental Health in Los Altos

Individuals in Los Altos that live with mental illness or care for a loved one with a mental illness may need outside support from time to time. The Santa Clara County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness offers a number of support groups that seek to provide comfort and resources. Groups for consumers meet every Sunday each month. Those who care for someone who is mentally ill can participate in once-monthly meetings at various locations throughout Santa Clara County. Groups for residents who speak Spanish or Chinese are available as well. Please call 408-453-0400 for further details.2

Los Altos residents that need employment assistance can check their eligibility for the CalWORKs program, offered by the Santa Clara County Department of Employment and Benefit Services. The program provides job-related education and trainings to prepare participants for self-sufficiency. Current Education

Those who are interested in serving their community as a mental health counselor can obtain an advanced degree in counseling psychology from Palo Alto University. The program's courses are offered on nights and weekends to accommodate students' work and family schedules. Students obtain practical knowledge and skills in the classroom, as well as field experiences during which they can put their skills to the test. Options for emphasis in marriage and family therapy or professional clinical counseling are available. For more information about the program, call 650-417-2023.4 Upon graduation, students are eligible for licensure in California as a licensed practitioner, either as a Marriage and Family Therapist or a Professional Clinical Counselor.5
