About Port Coquitlam, B.C.

Riverside, Citadel, Maple Creek, Pitt River, Mary Hill

“PoCo” is the nickname of the city of Port Coquitlam located 45 minutes east of Vancouver.  The city is nearly bisected by the Canadian Pacific Railway yard with two underpass crossings.  The city of Coquitlam with the Coast Mountains is to the north, the Coquitlam River borders it to the west and the cities of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge are across the Pitt River. The appeal is to have big city connections with small town charm. In 1859 European settlers came to farm beside the Pitt River where the Coast Salish people had already been residing.  Port Coquitlam counselling helps individuals and families work through difficult issues in life for positive change.  The Canadian Pacific Railway moved from Vancouver to the Fraser River in 1911.  Port Coquitlam was incorporated as a municipality in 1913.  Originally, it was a farming community but due to densification and expansion of Vancouver, we now see mostly suburban housing on the northern and south western expansion. A variety of industrial and commercial developments have expended to include metal fabrication, high technology industries and transportation.

Terry Fox, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba grew up in Port Coquitlam as an active teenager involved in many sports.  Terry was only 18 when he was diagnosed with bone cancer and forced to have his right leg amputated above the knee in 1977.  Terry made a decision, while in hospital,  to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research due to the suffering of other young cancer patients.  The “Marathon of Hope” was his journey.  After preparing by running 5,000 kilometres in 18 months, Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980.  Enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount as he ran 26 miles a day through the Eastern provinces, Quebec and Ontario. “It was a time Canadians never forgot.”Unfortunately, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario due to his cancer appearing in his lungs.  The country was stunned and saddened.  We lost Terry on June 28, 1981.  Each fall the run continues, in Terry’s memory, across the country to raise funds for cancer research.
