Current Initiatives

The King County Citizen Corps Council and Washington Citizen Corps have joined forces to teach classes on more than a dozen topics related to disaster recovery, with a special emphasis on Psychological First Aid.⁵ This initiative is funded through a grant from Homeland Security. Such events are necessary due to the fact that there are a mere 29 firefighters and 12 police officers on duty serving a community of almost 94,000 residents. By becoming an official CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams-A Partner Program of Citizen Corps) member, the government of Renton has assured that citizens receive immediate psychological assistance in time of disaster.
