San Diego is located along the coast in Southern California bordering along Mexico. With over 1.2 million people it is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest in the continental U.S. San Diego has a Mediterranean climate and is home to numerous military facilities. The economy is comprised of computer sciences, agriculture, defense related manufacturing, financial services, and tourism. One of the largest draws to San Diego is Sea World and the San Diego Zoo, which see thousands of visitors a month. European settlers first discovered San Diego in 1499. It was incorporated as a city of the United States in 1850,1 with a significant naval presence developing in the early 1900s to protect the border with Mexico. The military has continued to have a strong influence in this area to the present day. In the past twenty years, San Diego has been undergoing an urban renewal, developing the city with skyscrapers, five star hotels, restaurants, and boutiques.

Mental Health in San Diego

San Diego has had an ongoing problem with suicide. While rates in the first part of the 2000s were 20 percent lower than in the first part of the 1990s, in recent years the suicide rate has begun to rise again.2 Veterans of the armed forces have specific issues that raise their risk of taking their own life, and with well over 230,000 veterans living in San Diego County,3 there is a high need for specialized treatment.

The San Diego County Division of Behavioral Health Services (BHS) is an excellent resource for San Diego citizens who are in need of mental health care support. BHS offers a wide variety of programs and services for children, adults, and families at dozens of locations throughout San Diego. Prevention, treatment, and intervention services aim to help individuals live happy, healthy lives. For more information about BHS's programs or to get a referral, call 1-888-724-7240.4

Current Initiatives

Live Well San Diego is a 10-year health initiative organized by over 50 San Diego County departments. By garnering widespread public and private support, the goal of the program is to bring awareness to the root causes of physical and mental illness and address the rising cost of health care. Protecting community members from all forms of abuse is a primary undertaking of the project. Additionally, the program seeks to educate the public about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. The wellness and prevention component of the Affordable Care Act fits nicely into the overall goals of the program.5
