The Santa Ana Mountains offer a wide variety of activities for residents and visitors to this part of California. They are a short peninsular range of mountains that run for 35 miles south of the Los Angeles basin and are the border between Orange and Riverside counties. A number of minerals have been discovered and mined in the mountain range. Lead, silver, zinc, tin, clay, gypsum, limestone, and coal have all been taken out of the hills since the 1870s. The Santa Anas start in the north at Chino Hills and are divided from the southern portion by Santa Ana Canyon, which is home to the Santa Ana River. The highest peaks in the range are Santiago and Modjeska, which are both over 5,000 feet. Santiago peak can be climbed and has several trails to the top. Known to be a fairly strenuous hike, it is 16 miles in length that gains 4,000 feet in elevation. From the summit of Santiago, one can see the other peaks in the range and also much of the beautiful Southern California landscape.1
