Simi Valley is one of the finest places to live in the Greater Los Angeles area. Families will find many enjoyable activities, attractions, and events. Teenagers will have a great time at Red Zone, one of the area's best arcades and amusement centers. And there's little better for enjoying those hot summer days than taking a dip in the Rancho Simi Community Park Pool. Everyone in the family can find something to enjoy at Rancho Madera Community Park, featuring gorgeous hiking trails and all of the athletic facilities one would expect, from basketball and tennis courts to baseball diamonds, a playground, and picnic area.1 Young kids will love the Santa Susana Railroad Depot and Museum, featuring historical and modern railroad memorabilia and an extensive scale model train. Families can enjoy the year long pleasant weather, and summertime especially affords many fantastic occasions to load up the SUV and head out to one of southern California's famous beaches.

Mental Health in Simi Valley

Among the most pressing health and social issues in Simi Valley are substance use and abuse, mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders, as well as homelessness. Among these, mental health issues are the most critical, as services in the area are lacking in order to treat the large number of city residents who need mental health care. Without easy access to services, an increased number of calls to local police are being made. As a result, individuals who need counseling or institutionalization are being incarcerated instead.2

The Samaritan Center is the only homeless shelter in Simi Valley that also requires residents to enter a wraparound services program. The mission of the center is to break the cycle of homelessness by providing people with resources and tools they need to help themselves. Each individual has an action plan that outlines specific goals and outcomes for acquiring employment, housing, and improving mental health. By offering programs tailored to each individual, the center increases the likelihood of successful advancement into independent living. For more information about the center and it's programs and services, call 805-579-9166.3

Current Initiatives

To address the significant teen drinking problem facing the state, the California Governor's Prevention Advisory Council and the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs have implemented the Preventing Adolescent Drinking Initiative. The initiative seeks to reduce teen binge drinking through social change. In particular, the initiative seeks to eliminate social norms that have made it okay for children to consume alcohol. A movement to reduce the number of alcohol ads and eliminate the sale of alcohol at youth events is underway. Additionally, the initiative seeks to educate the public, particularly retailers, about the true dangers of teen drinking. By working with communities, parents, agencies, and schools, the initiative believes that teen health can be greatly improved.4
