Utica New York is a picturesque, little town in Oneida County. There are approximately 60,000 residents, all of whom reside amongst one of the state's most extensive park systems. One way to take in the country is by taking a ride on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Another such attraction that's more for the children is Utica's own Children's Museum. More of a learning center than an art gallery, the Children's museum focuses on local history, environmental science, the arts, and space science. Adults who are interested in appealing to their aesthetics could venture towards the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute, which offers 20 galleries composed of rotating and permanent exhibitions from the world's most notable collections. Appealing to a broader range of individuals is the Utica Zoo. The zoo offers more than 200 animals spread across over 80 acres of land.1 If a closer encounter with nature is desired, the Utica Marsh Wildlife Management Area is spread across 213 acres and offers 2 observation towers, a bike trail, boat access, and more.

Mental Health in Utica

The Neighborhood Center of Utica offers a Mobile Crisis Assessment Team that provides emergency intervention services to adults and children in Oneida County. The team will provide emergency mental health assessments, as well as crisis de-escalation services to ensure the safety of everyone involved. The team also works with schools, hospitals, and other local agencies to promote the continued stability of the individual after the crisis has passed. These services are free of charge and are available 24-hours a day, seven-days a week. Call 844-732-6228 if you or someone you know is in a mental health emergency.2

The primary purpose of the Mohawk Valley Somali Bantu Community Association is to help Somali refugees and immigrants in their efforts to integrate with the local community. In addition to basic programs, such as educational support, translation and interpretation services, and housing support, the association also offers advocacy programs to ensure families have access to the resources they need to function well within the community. The organization also provides crisis intervention services for individuals and families that are having difficulty with a legal problem, medical issue, or poor mental health. For additional details about these services, call 315-601-0363.3

Another local agency committed to multicultural integration is For the Good. This agency serves the needs of minority, inner-city youth by combatting violence, poverty, and lack of education. For the Good provides recreational activities that keep kids off the streets, out of trouble, and in a safe, caring environment where they can learn and grow in a positive manner. Their Study Buddy program influences children by helping them achieve success in the classroom. Employment assistance and training programs also help minority youth build a bright future by linking them with opportunities to learn a trade that makes a good wage. By providing these supportive services, For the Good promotes improved functioning for one of Utica's most vulnerable populations. Further information is available by calling 315-797-2417.4

Current Initiatives

The Central New York Veteran's Outreach Center is dedicated to providing supportive resources to veterans and their families that improve their daily functioning and overall well-being. These outreach programs were devised due to the many unmet needs veterans have after returning from service, including those related to employment, housing, and mental health. The Outreach Center provides wraparound case management services that ensure access to programs is available, and coordinates services to ensure a continuum of care. To learn more about these outreach programs, call 315-765-0975.5
