Waxahachie is a small city located in central Texas, just south of Dallas. The city was established in 1850 as the seat of Ellis County. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was known for it's vast cotton fields. Other agricultural pursuits contributed to the local economy, which thrived until the demand for cotton decreased after the Great Depression.1 Since 1997, the city has been known as the Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas. Each summer, the old streets of downtown are lined with hundreds pink crape myrtles in full bloom. Various other events are held throughout the year to provide enjoyment for the entire family. The Mardi Gras Parade is a lively event, as is the Gingerbread Trail. For history buffs, the Veteran's Day reenactment of World War II battles is sure to please. For Christmas cheer, consider taking part in the Victorian Christmas Festival.
