A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine compared the burden of sleep disorders among a cohort of US transgender and cisgender youth. “We were looking for any differences in sleep disorders between cisgender and transgender youth and between transgender people using and those not using gender-affirming therapy,” study author Dr. Ronald Gavidia, M.S., M.S. told us. A recent study on gender minority mental health in the U.S. gathered information from a national survey on college campuses among undergraduate and graduate students. “I have been conducting transgender health research for more than a decade,” study author Sari Reisner told us. “Routine collection of gender identity data as a population demographic is vital to public health. According to the Washington Post, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco was invited to speak at a Catholic conference in New York City on June 3.(Gibson, June 3, 2015) The gathering was to discuss reintroducing the Latin Mass, but Cordileone also used his speaking time to declare, “The clear biological fact is that a human being is born either male or female.” He went on to remark about his bewilderment at the concept of gender identity being fluid and socially constructed. He drew laughter in reporting that one university has identified 14 different sexual identities of their students, and that he expects even more to be created over time. [More]

On May 29, 2015, President Obama re-proclaimed that June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month. In his re-proclamation, Obama highlights his Executive Order on LGBT workplace discrimination. In this landmark order, Federal contractors are protected against discriminations based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
