Are you a great multitasker? According to research studies, only two per cent of the population is actually proficient at multitasking. Considered an asset, especially in the workforce, studies are now finding that multitasking actually accounts for a 40 per cent drop in productivity, costing the U.S. economy $650 billion annually. It also results in a 10 per cent drop in IQ. But there are some of us that can do it successfully. So what makes the two per cent of the population who can multitask efficiently different from the rest of us? A new study published in eNeuro looked at the brain and multitasking to get a better sense of where in the brain these functions occur.

There have been a significant number of semi colon tattoos showing up in the news in July. This trend has been worldwide and was started by Project Semicolon, an organization that focuses on concerns of mental illness such as: suicide, depression, addiction,and self-injury.Because an author inserts a semicolon at a point where a sentence could be ended, but is not ended. The reminder is that you are the author of your own life and can choose to continue, rather than end it.

Summertime is known to be a time of relaxation, fun, family time, and long and lazy days. It is also a time when children are a little more independent, as they are off with friends, away at camp, on vacations and field trips, and learning and trying new things. Generally speaking, parents are prepared to send children on their adventures. Their backpacks are armed with bug spray, bottled water, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and with extras of everything just in case. But what is often missed is the opportunity to arm them with safety from those who may try to harm them.

A diverse population of people seeks behavioral health services every year, and it’s essential that they receive services that are effective and culturally sensitive. Developing cultural competence is an ongoing, lifelong process. There is always more to learn. When counselors have cultural awareness and competence, the clients they serve are more likely to engage, reach their goals, and have a positive experience with behavioral health services.

Gainful employment and stable housing are necessary for almost everyone to be successful members of society. When access to either of these is limited, life becomes very difficult. People with mental health disorders deserve the same access to employment and housing to enable them to be safe and contribute to their communities and feel worthwhile and valuable. Unfortunately, stigma and discrimination still create inequities for people with mental illness, and as a society it benefits us all to work hard to increase acceptance and decrease stereotyping and misperceptions about people with mental illness.

For individuals with mental illness, dealing with all of the associated problems is difficult. Having to face the judgment from themselves and from others can often compound the problem. Mental illness is still something that people do not generally want to talk about in positive and productive ways. The silence is often born of the worry about the stigma attached to it.
