Amnesty International ("People on the move", n.d.) reports that more than 230 million people live outside their country of birth. That is about 3% of the world's global population. When Billie Holiday sang it at Cafe Society in Greenwich Village, which was the first integrated club in New York, it became a passionate and disturbing anthem for the Civil Rights movement.
The “Strange Fruit” referred to the lynchings of black men in the South.
