Mental Health in El Toro
El Toro is home to the Marine Corps Air Station and is located in Orange County, California. As with any area that has military establishments, El Toro is home to a very large number of marines and military service men. Being away from home and witnessing the traumatic events of war and military duty overseas is extremely distressing for most Marines.
Thus, it comes as no surprise that a lot of these service men and women, upon their return from duty, experience symptoms that point to mental health related issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Some may even become addicted to drugs and alcohol. Sadly, the number of military personnel who were diagnosed with a mental health related issue rose between the year 2000 and 2011.2
For the residents of El Toro, there are several organizations that work toward treating mental health related issues. The Mental Health Association of Orange County runs several programs that offer treatments for people with mental diseases. They also allow regular citizens to volunteer for them. Their crisis hotline is 877-7-CRISIS or 877-727-4747.3
Current Initiatives
Although no recent developments have been made with regards to mental health initiatives, NAMI Orange County is an organization that continues to operate and provide excellent treatment for El Toro residents. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) offers treatment for mental illnesses, as well as critical support during emergencies. Their helpline is 714-544-8488.4
