Inglewood, California is a suburb of Los Angeles, and has long been known as a great place for families. There's plenty of room for your kids to run around and have fun on the playground equipment at Edward Vincent Jr. Park (also known locally as Centinela Park). They even have a pool for summertime fun. Go ahead and pack a picnic lunch, and relax while the kids splash and play. Briarwood Community Center is a fantastic place, with activities for teenagers and children. The Community Center makes it a point to promote tolerance of the area's racial diversity. On top of being a busy community in its own right, Inglewood is a short drive from all of the many Southern California attractions in the Greater Los Angeles area.1 A short drive will have your family enjoying the refreshing water and sandy beaches that make So Cal so famous. And Disneyland is just a stone's throw away. Or, if you want to spend your time mixing some education in with your amusement, load up the kids and head out to the California Science Center, featuring hands on exhibits, an IMAX theater, and numerous presentations designed to thrill the whole family. With the area's famous pleasant weather, your family will enjoy outdoor recreation all year long. Educational options for your children include Inglewood High, Wilder's Prepatory Academy, George W. Crozier Middle, Morningside High, Moffet Elementary, and Kelso Elementary. Whether you're coming here to visit, or moving in permanently, you're going to be thrilled with the Inglewood area.

Mental Health in Inglewood

As one of the most multicultural cities in California, Inglewood is home to a diverse range of populations. The presence of various nationalities and cultures has allowed Inglewood to become one of the fastest growing cities in the Los Angeles county. However, this transnationalism can also cause issues in the community. Inglewood has one of the highest rates of gang membership and violence in the country. Unemployment among gang members is over 40% and substance abuse rates amongst gang members are steadily on the rise. Inglewood also has one of the highest substance abuse rates amongst pregnant women nationwide.2

Individuals seeking help with substance abuse can visit the El Dorado Community Center, which specializes in planning and providing customized programs that help curb addiction.3 Treatment at the El Dorado Community Center is designed for pregnant and post-partum women, in response to the high substance abuse rates amongst pregnant women in Inglewood. Along with detoxification programs, El Dorados licensed counselors conduct therapy programs to help individuals and couples through the rehabilitation process. For more information, the contact number for the El Dorado Community Center is 310-671-9294.

Current Initiatives

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) is an international awareness foundation working to raise awareness about drug abuse, gang membership, and adolescent violence. D.A.R.E was founded and has its headquarters in Inglewood, where it operates an anti-violence campaign and holds an annual training conference to teach attendees about the dangers of gang membership and how to deal with these threats to the community.

The Youth and Firearms Violence Initiative is an Inglewood based program that cooperates with the Inglewood Police Department to enforce firearm regulations around the community. It targets neighbourhoods with high rates of drug abuse, truancy, and gang violence. Community members may volunteer to serve as role models to the community and visit high schools around the area to discuss the dangers of substance abuse and unlicensed gun use.4
