Mental Health in Laguna Hills

The city of Laguna Hills plans to take care of its veterans, as evidenced by the growing number of mental health providers serving veterans in the area. Strength in Support (SIS), a non-profit organization that opened its doors in 2013, provides mental health services to both military members and their families. The state of California is home to over 2 million veterans, more than any other state.2 Service men and women often have a difficult time readjusting to civilian life after their service and during deployment, their families suffer from stress, anxiety, and loneliness. In addition, many of these families are low-income, with more than 3,500 veterans in Orange County being homeless.3

Seeing the need for additional services in the area, SIS was formed by therapists, businesspeople, and veterans and their families. The organization provides counseling for individuals, couples, and families. They also offer a mentorship program and educational workshops. Fees are low and those who are unable to afford the cost can still enter the program. Call 949-505-5015 x102 to speak to a counselor, or call the main number without the extension to find out more about their programs.4 Veterans can receive additional help from the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Laguna Beach.

Current Initiatives

The Orange County Veterans Services Initiative (OSVSI) was established by the Orange County Community Foundation to help veterans by providing transitional services for those with physical and mental illnesses. Because a lack of resources leads to suicide, unemployment, depression, and a host of other problems, they offer transition services including counseling, education, and employment support.5
