In the southern part of the County of Orange, California, there's a portion of land referred to as the saddleback valley. This lush area, only ten miles from the Pacific Ocean, is the location of a place called Laguna Woods. Around 90 % of the population in Laguna Woods is of retirement age, so one would expect nearly everything to be aimed at the senior demographic, which is only partially true. It turns out that this community has several passions, and schools are one of those passions. Here, in Laguna Woods, several school choices are available to students, from private-parochial to public. At the main museum in the area, the Laguna Art Museum, students---from elementary school age to teenagers---are encouraged to tour its exhibitions. Although the museum contains over 3500 works, ranging from the early nineteenth century to present day, Laguna Woods residents are especially proud of the impressionistic paintings of William Wendt (1865-1946).1 After Wendt moved to Laguna Woods, it seemed he couldn't get enough of painting its beautiful landscapes.

Orange County is home to nearly 140,000 veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.4 Soldiers returning from service often face many challenges as they transition back to civilian life, not the least of which are mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. To help returning veterans acquire the tools and services they need to overcome these challenges, the Orange County Community Foundation began the Orange County Veteran Services Initiative. As part of the program, veterans can access resources regarding transition to civilian life, education, financial assistance, and mental health care.
