In 2001, the city of Oceanside entered into a ten-year agreement with Coca-Cola where Coke provides the city with funds, approximately 40% of the revenue generated from vending sales.  This money is then put into a youth program where clubs, groups, and community centers have to apply for some funding to help with their youth programs.  No transportation, administration, or capital funding applications will even be considered, it is strictly for youth-driven projects, activities or events.  Oceanside has a Junior Lifeguard program that allows kids from 9-17 to learn about beach safety and ocean lifesaving skills from experienced lifeguards.  There are certain criteria that must be met before the kids can go through the training.1  Another fun event during the year is an outdoor sculpture competition, where an artists sculpture will be voted on and the winning sculptures will be on display outside the Oceanside Public Library Courtyard.  There are also monetary prizes for the winners.

Mental Health in Oceanside

The beautiful coastal city of Oceanside is the northernmost of San Diego County's cities. It is located immediately to the south of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, which is the largest public employer in the city.2 Partly due to the proximity of the Marine Corps Base, there are many veterans living in the city of Oceanside. In fact, more than 16,000 veterans lived in the city in 2010, which is almost ten percent of the entire population.3 Veterans and active service members face special risks of mental health issues due to the stresses of combat and separation from family members. This leads to an increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, substance abuse and even suicide.4 Veterans, current service members, and anyone else who faces any of these mental health issues should seek out therapy as soon as possible. The US Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in Oceanside can help with veterans' issues. It can be reached at 760-643-2000.
