I've had a 40 year career at the Department of Veteran's Affairs working in Mental Health units. Many of those patients had a primary problem with Substance Abuse. I have completed substance abuse assessments, facilitated outpatient and inpatient therapy groups for substance abusers, and extensively worked with their families. I have a deep understanding of the issues surrounding substance abuse and am aware of the community resources required to fully treat substance abuse. My approach toward addiction is to discover, with the client, what it has been accomplishing for him or her. In other words, what the purpose of the addiction is, its specific cause. The factor or factors that have been keeping it in place. I also tend to use cognitive-semantic processing and skills training because, very often, a person's unexamined thoughts and beliefs about self, life, and addiction may be an obstacle to his or her recovery. I started my work in this field primarily focusing on addictive disorders. In the last 30 years the magnitude of addictive behaviors have exploded. What used to be primarily drug and alcohol addiction now covers many different types of addictive behaviors including sex, spending, shopping, food, gambling and the internet, just to name a few of the more common ones. My approach when working with people who are struggling with addiction is first help them maintain a level of sobriety or abstinence from their addictive behaviors. We create an individualized treatment plan with an emphasis on relapse prevention that often includes support groups and family or couples therapy.

Rooted in a holistic approach, I believe that addiction stems from early-life adversity and trauma, causing individuals to seek belonging in substances or behaviors. I emphasize the importance of compassion, self-acceptance, and addressing underlying pain as key components of recovery. I do not agree with this cultures approach of criminalizing drug use and clearly see how this belief has done a disservice to people who ultimately need healing. I offer a support group based on The Genesis Process for Relapse Prevention of Addictive/ Compulsive Behavior's by Michael Dye and Patricia Fancher, PhD. This is a Christian-based curriculum designed to identify and facilitate healing of emotional wounds underlying addictive compulsive behaviors. The support group provides an opportunity for participants to discuss application of Genesis Process skills in daily life.
