Miami is one of the most popular cities within the state of Florida. Here you will obviously be able to enjoy the weather while sunbathing on the sand or catching a great wave as you attempt to surf back to shore. However, there are also a wide variety of attractions nearby guaranteed to be entertaining for your children, teenagers, and adult family members alike. South Beach is one of the hotspots in the area. Along with amenities to support your typical day near the ocean, this site provides access to multiple shopping areas and restaurants. Specifically great for your children and teenagers is an attraction called Monkey Jungle. Here they can observe primates engaging in social interactions in a simulated natural environment.1 Who knows, maybe they will enjoy observing your family, too. Miccosukee Indian Village and Airboat Rides offers a unique view of up-close reptiles with alligators galore. Coral Gables High and Ponce De Leon Middle are a few of several schools located within and around the city.

Mental Health in Miami

Miami is home to a population that is young and multicultural.2 The number of Hispanics rapidly increased from 2000-2010, with nearly 65 percent of Miami-Dade county residents now identifying as Hispanic. Nearly 20 percent of Miami residents are African-American.3 As a result, multicultural counseling takes on an added significance in order to meet the unique needs of Miami's residents.

The Miami Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers a number of free support groups for individuals in need. Several family groups meet twice monthly, where those who have a loved one with a mental illness can meet to discuss issues of concern, such as medication management, behavioral interventions, and stigma associated with mental illness. NAMI also offers multiple groups for individuals living with a mental illness. Consumer support groups are open to all adults, regardless of diagnosis. For more information about these groups, please call 305-665-2540.4

Current Initiatives

A recent initiative by the Florida health officials that focuses on preventative health measures and wellness is being brought to fruition by a series of grants to south Florida non-profit health care providers. Among the areas of emphasis is to provide quality, affordable, and accessible mental health care to underserved populations in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe Counties. Programs that provide behavioral medicine, peer support, social-recovery services, substance abuse education, and training for behavioral health workers has been funded as part of the nearly $1.5 million in grants from the Health Foundation of South Florida.5
