In 1868, Atlanta became the state capital and the fifth city named as a capital in the Americas. During the 1960s, Atlanta was involved in organizing the US Civil Rights Movement with Dr. Martin Luther King, along with students from Atlanta's black colleges. Atlanta and Fulton County have extremely high poverty rates. As of 2012, 24.3 percent of Atlanta citizens lived below the poverty line, including many couples and families.2 In addition to the challenges this presents for finding quality, affordable health care, the poor must also contend with issues related to housing, food and nutrition, education, and employment. Many poverty-stricken families additionally struggle with substance use and mental health issues. Nearly 15 percent of Atlanta residents have used an illegal drug in the past year, and almost 6 percent of the population suffered a major depressive episode in the past year.3

Agencies like Families First seek to help couples and families overcome obstacles to lead healthier lives. Educational programs are offered to help parents learn how to effectively parent their children. Parents learn how to provide their children with the support they need in order to develop into fully-functioning members of society. Those interested in becoming a foster parent or adoptive parent can find many resources at Families First. Family Services and Assistance Programs

There are many organizations in the Atlanta area that provide families with assistance in times of need. The Fulton County Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) provides low-income families with employment help, assistance with childcare, and mental health services. DFCS also investigates reports of child abuse and provides child protective services and afterschool programs for children. Children in foster care can participate in the TeenWork program, which provides summer jobs for young people aged 16-21. Residents in need of help can visit one of the many DFCS satellite offices in Fulton County, or they can call 1-877-423-4746 for additional information.5
