Brooklyn is considered one of the boroughs located within New York City, and was consolidated into NYC in 1898. Brooklyn is definitely one of the city's most populous boroughs with around 2.5 million people residing there.1 If Brooklyn had not been consolidated into New York City, it would be considered the fourth largest city in America. Even though it is a part of NYC, the area has its own culture, arts scene and architectural heritage, with the neighborhoods having established themselves as ethnic enclaves. The Dutch were the first to arrive in here in 1634, living alongside the Native Americans that already lived there. During the 1630s, the Dutch settlers purchased land from the Mohawks, which now includes the areas of Red Hook, Gowanus, the Brooklyn Naval Yard, and Bushwick. Brooklyn was named by the Dutch after the town Bruekelen in the Netherlands, becoming the first municipality in what is now known as New York City in 1646.

Mental Health in Brooklyn

People who live with an addiction to prescription pills can get on the road to recovery by joining one of several Pills Anonymous support groups in the New York City area. The group offers social and emotional support as addicts work through a 12-step program of recovery. Participants share their experiences and work through difficult times together at weekly meetings. Although some meetings are closed, most are open to anyone who is committed to change. For information about meeting times and locations, call 212-874-0700.2

The Supportive Outreach Services offered by the New York City Housing Authority support the mental health needs of residents of the city's five boroughs. People who struggle to cope with daily stressors can participate in programs that help them develop effective coping strategies and problem solving abilities. Advocacy and referral services are also offered. In cases of a mental health crisis, staff members will intervene to ensure individuals and their families remain safe. For further details, call 718-498-3243.3

The Arab-American Family Support Center is one of many organizations that seek to help Brooklyn's diverse population develop the skills they need to be active and engaged members of the community. Crisis intervention services provide culturally and linguistically appropriate programs to individuals who experience a mental health emergency. Language and education classes break down cultural barriers and help Arab-American immigrants better adjust to life in the United States. Support groups are also available to meet the needs of those impacted by violence. For additional information about these programs, call 718-643-8000.4

Current Initiatives

The primary purpose of the Jericho Project's Veterans Initiative is to create affordable housing options so veterans of the U.S. armed forces do not end up living on the street. Jericho offers supportive housing for veterans at two locations, both of which offer veteran-specific services to meet the unique mental health needs of individuals who have been deployed. Employment services are offered as well, to ensure a smooth transition to civilian work. To learn more about this initiative, call 646-624-2341.5
